Elevating Your Jewellery: A Reflection on Life's Milestones
Share
So it finally happened! My wedding ring arrived today! It was quite an epic journey for it really. Let's start at the beginning. I haven't been able to wear my wedding ring (which was coupled with my engagement ring) for five years! Yes! That's right! Ever since my eldest (daughter Tayana) was born I have been unable to wear it. Childbirth really does alter your body and it was a while before I recovered from the swelling post labour. By that point I was definitely a few pounds heavier being a breastfeeding mother with little time to care for myself as I adjusted to the chaos of having a new-born and very little sleep! Hormones all over the place! Anyway by the time I was at a point where I could have reclaimed a bit of myself (I breastfed my eldest until she was two years and three months and co-slept so it was a long journey) I was happily expecting our second baby! So of course I never did get back into my wedding rings!
Our second child (son Niyam) turned two years old when I finally accepted I might need to have my ring altered. I have given birth to two beautiful healthy human beings and I am proud of the permanent changes that have taken place in my physical body. Spiritually I am far more self-confident having had my two children. They have taught me to love myself and I can honestly say I think I am more beautiful now than I ever could have been or was prior to having children.
Reclaiming My Wedding Rings
So I decided to have my wedding rings altered to fit! My hubby Gwinyai sent off my rings and was eagerly awaiting their return only to discover he had not updated our address from when he first purchased my rings before we got married! So the rings ended up going to an address we had not lived at for 7 years! You can imagine the panic!
My husband immediately drove to the address (a whole 40 minutes away) to speak with the person living there who was, lo and behold, not at home! He left notes for him on the door and through the letterbox (he discovered it was a him owing to his unfortunate dumping of his empty post boxes outside his front door!). Anyway, we did not hear back from him! So my husband contacted the jewellers to get a tracking number and the estate agents who managed the property we used to live at. The tenant was very helpful and got in touch. He had not received the parcel thankfully which meant we could redirect it. My husband did that, went and picked up the parcel, which was thankfully in his name, and I have my rings!
Jewellery as a Celebration of You
A piece of jewellery is so much more than just a piece of jewellery! I was reminded of this today. Getting my rings back today reminded me of why at Mayaani Jewellery I have coined the phrase 'because your jewellery should be more than just an after thought'. My ring for me is so much more than just a ring! It is a poignant reminder of the promises I made to my husband and best friend on our wedding day. It carries with it all of the precious memories of his proposal, our engagement celebrations, the preparations for our wedding, our wedding day, our first house purchase and our first pregnancy!
Your jewellery not only carries with it memories of key moments in your life but, is a reflection of you and an embodiment of a particular phase of your life. It captures your personality, style, essence at that particular point in your life. It is very much a celebration of you! It should be given more thought. So don't just settle on a piece of jewellery because it is 'nice' or 'sort of matches' or 'it'll do' or 'I don't really have time so this will have to do.' Your jewellery should always be nothing short of a piece you have fallen in love with! I remember every since piece of jewellery I have ever lovingly purchased and no end of regret when I have purchased a piece that I have just settled on for whatever reason. The latter choices always leave me feeling like something is lacking or somewhat disappointed by my decision to purchase instead of choosing to walk away!
At Mayaani Jewellery I am here to make sure your jewellery is so much more than just a piece of jewellery. Together we can make it the perfect celebration of you at this very point in your life. Because every stage of you is worth celebrating and every stage of your life is worth encapsulating. Let your jewellery be part of how you choose to do that.
Because your jewellery should always be so much more than just an after thought!
